A visit to the Sunshine Coast wouldn't be complete without a stop in Roberts Creek, stretching from Gower Point to Wilson Creek. Small and peaceful, this little corner of the Coast prides itself on being a safe, family-oriented community. The Community Hall is in regular use for rockin' dances, community meetings and bingo nights. Children, dogs and bicycles take priority over vehicles, even on the main Roberts Creek Road. Glorious gardens bloom year round, and the natural vegetation and trees are carefully tended by local landowners.

HOW TO GET HERE

Roberts Creek photographer Mike Hovden captures an eagle at workTo get to Roberts Creek, take the Sunshine Coast ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to the Langdale terminal. (For ferry details, see the website: www.bcferries.bc.ca, or call 1-888-BCFERRY.) When you get off the boat, head straight up the hill on the bypass road. (Most of the traffic goes this way, so just follow the crowd.) At the top of the hill, you'll turn left, then take the right curve heading into Gibsons. When you get to the traffic light at North Road and Highway 101 in Gibsons, turn right. About 4 km out of Gibsons, you can take the scenic route to Roberts Creek by turning left off the highway at the Lower Road junction (go slowly on this road - there are lots of pedestrians and bicycles). Follow the curves to the corner of Roberts Creek Road. Or continue along Highway 101 for about 10 km out of Gibsons until you come to the top of Roberts Creek Road, and turn left down the hill to the corner of Lower Road.

Or, if you're coming from Powell River, take the ferry from Saltery Bay to Earls Cove at the north end of the Sunshine Coast. Drive south along Highway 101 through Garden Bay and Madeira Park and, farther south, Secret Cove and Halfmoon Bay. Continue on Highway 101 right through Sechelt, Davis Bay and Wilson Creek. About 8 km south of Wilson Creek, you'll come to Roberts Creek Road - turn right.

Malaspina Coach Lines charter bus service ( Tel: 604-885-2217 Toll Free: 1-877-227-8287) runs from both the Langdale and Earls Cove terminals, and public transit (885-3234) from Langdale. Or you can even fly if that strikes your fancy. (Call Tofino Airlines Ltd. at 604.740.8889 or Pacific Wings Airlines at 604.885.2111 for flight schedules.)

WHAT THE LOCALS HAVE TO SAY

The residents of the Creek are a peculiar bunch, loyal to their community in a way mostly outdated in today's society. The Roberts Creek Community Association has a large and active membership whose voice is strong in matters concerning community events, planning and development. The drafting and implementation of the Official Community Plan (OCP) developed by the Community Association received a high degree of input from residents. In a survey generated to assess public opinion concerning the OCP, a series of questions was posed. The following is a partial list of answers from local "Creekers" to the question: "What is it you like about Roberts Creek?"
