Sunshine Coast Fishing

Salmon, cod, rockfish, trout, snapper, crabs, prawns . . . have we got fish!

REVIEW: FLY FISHING WITH TROUT TALES' SCOTT ELLIOTT
So, here’s the thing you need to know about me and fishing: it’s like me and horses; I really like it, but alas, I don’t seem to be very good at it. When it comes to horses, I have been thrown, bit, kicked, dumped off and left for dead, and dragged down a peat bog trail at a full gallop by one stirrup for a city block or two. When it comes to fish, I have thrown so much gear into snagging through inept casting that I might as well dump my wallet out into whatever body of water I happen to be standing in. I have also caught a seagull, IN FLIGHT, in full view of all the other fishers at Davis Bay (men, as fate would have it) when I was angling for a salmon. I tell you this to share the magnitude of my reverse-prowess that drove me to take some lessons in fly fishing from the Coast’s premier fly fishing guide, Scott Elliott of Trout Tales (http://www.trouttales.ca) this May.

From Gibsons to Roberts Creek, salmon fisherman troll along the shelf edges; Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay, Secret Cove and Pender Harbour are popular starting places for boaters and anglers.

Great spots to fish include: Storm Bay in Sechelt Inlet, Halfmoon Bay east of Jeddah Point, Smugglers Cove Marine Park (May to Sept.), Cranby Creek and Gillies Bay off Texada Island, Potter Bay, Lasqueti Island, Tucker Bay and Duncan Cove.

There are more than 30 marinas up and down our Coast, offering everything from boat rentals to live bait. A good place to start is Rockwater Secret Cove Resort
- arguably the sport salmon fishing mecca of the Coast. Whether you just want advice or you prefer a professionally-guided trip, the people at Rockwater are here to make sure you get a fishing trip you won't soon forget.

For freshwater fishing, check out the trout, cutthroat and kokanee of Sakinaw and Ruby Lakes at the north end of the Coast.
